What is Ayurveda?

In Sanskrit, Ayurveda translates to “the Knowledge of Life”. The Art and Science of Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine thought to be over 5,000 years old. Ayurveda connects and balances our internal and external worlds through the five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth, and groups them into three basic types of energy and functional principles which are present in everything and everybody. These are called the doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

In all of our experiences, be it physical, in thought forms, or emotions, Ayurveda applies certain qualities called gunas, which are categorized into 10 pairs of opposites, making a total of 20 qualities. Theoretically, everything in the universe can be described in terms of these gunas or qualities, including the doshas - vata, pitta, and kapha. The foundation of Ayurveda treatment relies on recognizing when gunas are excessive or deficient, which causes doshic imbalance within the body that can lead to disease. Ayurveda applies the opposite qualities to return the body, mind, and spirit back into balance.

Agni, the universal principle of transformation, manifests in the body’s digestive fire; transforming food into bodily tissue and waste; interpreting information into knowledge, and discerning between life giving nutrition and waste. Ayurveda kindles the agni of the body to digest toxins created by external and internal stressors, and brings the body to optimal functioning in mind and body.

Ayurveda can help us:

Connect to and work with our truest inner nature, resolving dis-ease and disconnect

Honor and develop our strengths

Redirect detrimental tendencies

Maintain balance even in the face of adversity.
